Baptism

Not sure if you're ready to take the plunge? Read this!

What is the meaning of baptism?

Baptism signifies what has already happened to us spiritually. Our old identity as a sinner is gone, and we rise with a new identity in Christ. It represents Christ’s burial and resurrection. It represents my new life as a Christ follower. Baptism does not make you a believer - it shows that you already believe. It’s the outward expression of the commitment you make in your heart.

“When someone becomes a Christian he becomes a brand new person inside. The old life has passed away and a new life has begun!” - 2 Corinthians 5:17

“By our baptism then, we were buried with Him and shared His death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead... so also we may live a new life!” - Romans 6:4

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith... it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.” - Ephesians 2:8,9

Who should be baptized?

Every person who has believed in Christ. If you have asked Jesus Christ to come in and take control of your life and have never been baptized then let us know. We want to help you make that happen!

“Those who believe and accepted His message were baptized...” - Acts 2:41

Why should I be baptized?

Because Christ commanded it. The first act of obedience Jesus calls me to make, after inviting Him into my life, is to be baptized. Baptism is the public announcement of a personal decision to follow Christ. Baptism does not “save” you, only your faith in Christ does that.

“Jesus said, ‘Go then, to all people everywhere and make them my disciples, baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit...”’ - Matthew 28:19-20

Why should I be
baptized under water?

To follow Jesus’ example: “At that time Jesus came from Nazareth and was baptized by John in the river.” - Mark 1:9.

When we go under the water, it represents Christ who went into the grave, and when we come out of the water, it represents His resurrection.

When should I be baptized?

As soon as you believe! There is no reason to delay.  As soon as you have made the decision to trust Jesus Christ, you can and should be baptized. If you wait until you are “perfect,” you’ll never feel like you’re ready. If you were baptized as a child, that was an expression of your parent’s faith, not your faith. If you have now personally accepted Christ, we encourage you to announce that decision through being baptized by choice.

“Those who believed…were baptized… that day!” - Acts 2:41

“But when they believed Philip as he preached the Good News…and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” -  Acts 8:12

INFANT & CHILD BAPTISMS

At BCF, we wait until our children are old enough to believe and understand the true meaning of baptism before we baptize them. The baptism that is talked about in the Bible is for those old enough to believe. The purpose is to publicly confess your personal commitment to Christ.

FAMILY BAPTISMS

Do you want to be baptized as a family? If each family member fully understands the meaning of baptism, and each one has personally placed his/her trust in Christ for salvation, we encourage families to be baptized at the same time. It is a wonderful expression of commitment.

If you are not sure if baptism is right for you, let us know. We are available to discuss with you the power and importance of this step in your spiritual life. For more information, or to schedule a baptism please call or email us at the BCF church office.
